Fiji Islands

Fiji has about 330 islands. However, not all of these islands are permanently inhabited. Most Fijians (87 percent) inhabit the islands of Viti Levu, which is 10,429 square kilometers, and Vanua Levu, which has an area of 5,556 square kilometers. Aside from Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, other main islands in Fiji are Taveuni (470 square kilometers), Kadavu (411 square kilometers), Gau (140 square kilometers) and Koro (104 square kilometers). Most of the islands in Fiji are volcanic, that is why there are mineral deposits on the main landmasses.

According to author David Stanley, the Fiji islands are arranged in a horseshoe configuration, with Viti Levu and adjacent islands on the west, Vanua Levu and Taveuni to the north, and the Lau Group on the east.

Viti Levu, Fiji’s mainland, is the place where most of the Fijian people live and much of the country’s history happened. Therefore, most of the best places in Fiji is concentrated in this area. Viti Levu is full of shops, cafes, clubs, restaurants, markets, monuments and other facilities. Suva, Fiji’s capital, is located here in Viti Levu.

If you will visit Viti Levu, be sure to explore the city of Suva. Suva has some of the country’s best entertainment, shopping and dining centers. Suva also offers a dazzling nightlife.
